Say good-bye to my little friend

Something clicked today.  Not sure what prompted it, but I had what they call an "aha" moment.  I'm tired of the scale controlling me.  The numbers effect my mood, and my mood effects the way I treat myself, and the negative treatment is not right.  I tried to justify weighing myself every morning, but seriously I'm only fooling myself.  After my weekly weigh in tomorrow I will be putting the scale away.

It's funny I have mixed emotions about this decision.  I feel as though a burden has been lifted off of me, but I also feel like I'm setting myself up for failure.  Weighing myself every hour is not healthy.  The stress it causes is not healthy.  I'm choosing to be healthy and pray to the Gods that by limiting the stress of the scale that the numbers will follow.

Now the big question is.....do I weigh every 2 weeks or every month?

I used to be a daily weigh in, but your right, the ups and downs every day take their toll. Before joining WW I was a once a month - but I think every two weeks would work too. :D

Weigh in whenever you feel most comfortable. I find that sometimes I need the scale to remind me to be good. So I like to do it when I am feeling a bit vulnerable to either assure myself that I haven't ruined anything, or to remind myself the consequences of poor decisions.

It's always good to step away from the pressure every once in a while to remind yourself of the real goals of weight loss - which aren't all seeing a low number on a piece of metal.

Get rid of it, we weigh, measure and take pics every 4 weeks. I admit I too get obsessed with weight, I took my dog in for a vet check up and just had to take my shoes off and get on the pet scale LOL

I agree with Ellie - weigh in when you feel like it, but don't overdo it. I used to be OCD about weighing, but now I only weigh myself once or twice a week. Basically, I'll weigh myself when I think I've lost weight. :)

On the flip side, I really pay attention to the tape measure. That is what really shows your results because you could maintain the same weight, but increase muscle mass and lose fat! Good luck, though!!!

I totally understand where you're coming from--I used to weight myself every day, sometimes twice a day. It can get very obsessive and unhealthy, and I would put too much stock in daily fluctuations. I still weight myself every week or two at the gym, but (like you) I'm trying to focus more on healthy behaviors and less on a certain number! Good for you.

I think every two weeks is good...and if you can time it on an off-TOM week, that would give you the most valid results I think. Plus you can check yourself before a whole month goes by...

It's so brave of you to put your scale away! I am an everyday weigher and not ready to put it away!

I don't know why it's so scary, right? I feel the same way and eventually I will be moving to once a month...but right now, I too nosy. I like Polar's suggestion - every two weeks - maybe we need to do this by baby steps as well. Good luck. You can do it.

I get what you're saying about it affecting your mood and then your day. Since I am kinda just started out, I for sure weigh myself once a week, but randomly weigh myself throughout the week too. Personally I'd do it every 2 weeks, just to make sure you're on the right track. That way you can see if what you're doing is working. I always weigh myself first thing in the morning too... because for me, it can flucturate even 2-3 lbs throughout the day. Good luck!

I had to have my best friend take and hide my scale - I weigh in weekly at WW and cheat a look here and there at the gym... before it was every day. If I did well then I would let myself splurge a bit, if I did poor then I ate because I felt bad...

I would definitely measure, and if it were me, I'd weigh in once every couple of weeks, just so that you have an idea of where you are. It's not too often to be obsessed about it, but just enough to make changes if the scale is heading in the wrong direction - a lot can happen in a month and I think a check-in is good. Now, I say this ONLY if you are having a hard time staying on plan. If you're not having any food issues then I think it's perfectly fine to weigh whenever you want, because you'll know that you're doing the best you can do and nothing the scale says could change that - I feel like I'm rambling....I hope some of this made sense!

When I lost my weight (over 10 years ago) I weighed once a month, mainly because this mechanical object was telling me how to feel and could make me happy or sad, depending on the reading. Also, a negative reading told me all my dieting efforts were for nothing and I might as well be eating. I played a lot of mental games with the scale. After I was done losing weight, one day we were having a garage sale and my husband put it out there and sold it!

I think this is an awesome idea!! I'm stuck weighing weekly at least until my office contest is over, but afterwards I may do the same thing! I think I would go every 2 weeks so you're still keeping an eye on your progress at first. If after a month you're doing well with it, maybe back it off more. I totally agree that we put way too much emphasis on that number. Maybe we can buy smaller jeans and use THAT as a measure of our progress? Just an idea! :)
