7 things you didn't know about me

A huge thank you to Bob, Twix, and Jeanette for my very first blog awards.  I wish I would have written a speech for this occasion, but I was unprepared.  Part of receiving this award is that you have to tell seven things about yourself and pass the award on to 15 other blogs.  Lets get down to the juicy tidbits of my life.  I know you are dying to know!

  1. I love to read.  My parents bought me a Kindle for Christmas and it was the best present I've ever received.  I use it on a daily basis.
  2. I own almost every Disney movie you can imagine.  I started collecting them back in high school before the kids.  I dare you to play me on Disney Trivial Pursuit!
  3. In 2001 I had Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (a band that you can't inflate or deflate).  2 months ago I went into the hospital with severe stomach pains.  The band is now starting to erode through my stomach.
  4. I tried to commit suicide in high school.  Sometimes I still wonder why I didn't die.
  5. Pink is my favorite color.  Polka dots is my favorite pattern.
  6. I really want to have another baby (but if I have another boy I will commit myself to the state hospital).
  7. My current hubby and I dated back in 2000.  He dumped me because he wanted to go drink at the bars and I wasn't old enough.  We found each other again when we were both going through divorces of our first marriages.
I don't really know 15 blogs unless I went down the list of the Hot 100 challenge.  So, I'm going to change the rules a bit.  I can do that because I'm a woman!  So, now I pass the blogger awards to the following people.

  1. Bubba at 440 to 220
  2. Val at Festively Plump
  3. Cathy B at The X-Banded Files
  4. Whitney at Slimming Down for the Gown
  5. Trish at Trish is Getting Fit
  6. Mrs. Happy Pants
  7. Amy at Let's Not Play Games
  8. The Ninja at Cooking It Off!

Oh so sorry to hear about your suicide attempt. You must have truly been unhappy and depressed. Fortunately I do not suffer from depression but I do believe it is definitely something chemical in the brain. As for the girl, my daughter who has 2 sons would love one but alas, her DH says no. My little sis had a third boy in her mid 30s and still grieves for a daughter but figures she will get a DIL someday. I was lucky- girl, boy and then girl when I was 39 (planned pregnancy too and never a regret). I love to read too; I am up to 100 this year. I have kept a log for the last several years- author, a couple of sentences about the book and sometimes rating. My younger DD will have her masters in library science/information technology in April and hopefully will find a job as a librarian then.

re: the band eroding through your stomach - what are the DRs going to do for you in regards to that??? Is this a common long-term outcome? Or did you get a defective band?

I envy you your Kindle (though I will always love the feel of a book in my hand).

I relate re: suicide attempt though I never "seriously" tried (except for throwing myself in front of a car which managed to avoid me on an icy road).

And I understand wanting a girl - but I'm sure you'd love any baby you had if you did it again.

To answer your question: I have to schedule surgery to remove the band. I'm not sure if it's a common thing in long term patients. At the time the band was placed I was 344 pounds and 19 years old; all I wanted was a quick fix to lose the weight. I didn't care what happened.

By the way, I lost about 60 pounds with the band and then had my two boys back to back (they are 14 months apart). With my second son, he wasn't gaining the weight he needed because I wasn't eating. So, in retrospect I think that's when I messed the band up by forcing myself to eat. After the kids were born, I gained all the weight back.

Melissa- Thanks for the blog award. (At least I think that's what this means... haha..) I had a Lap Band, but had it removed 9 weeks later. I will have to Google vertical banded gastroplasty to see how that is different (besides the inflation thing). That really sucks, doesn't it! I hope your band removal will go smoothly. Erosion is an issue with Lap Bands too, but that wasn't my problem. I had horrible esophageal dysmotility and got to the point i couldn't even sip water. it was AWFUL! But, the whole not-being-hungry thing... that was GREAT!
