It isn't fair

I have not had a full time job in 3 years.  For 3 years I have gone on countless interviews, I have been to resume writing workshops, I have submitted my resume more than 3,000 times, I have spent HOURS searching ads, I have gone to several work force/temporary agencies for help (currently I'm active with 3 companies), and I have been turned down every single time.

I have gone on a handful of interviews where I nailed it.  I said all the right things, the position was in my league, the interviewer was responsive, and I had all the qualifications they were looking for.  You always know when you spanked it or totally dropped the ball.  You just know.

This last interview was one of those times where I did everything perfect!  I was confident when I walked in and I was confident walking out that I would be getting a call back.  Then the dreaded email arrived this morning explaining they "picked someone else for the position and would keep my resume on file".

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?  It isn't fair!  I'm tired of trying so damn hard!

Honey there is nothing wrong with you!!! This freakin economy sucks balls!!!!
Back in the summer of '09 I got laid off from IBM where I had worked in various and progressively more "prestigious" positions for just shy of 10 years. They laid off close to 5000 people that year not just me. UGH, and it took me FOREVER to find a new job, and then I had the most bizarre experiences with other companies(one caused me to file a formal complaint with the EEOC!).
It is NOT you, its the economy. The bottom line is the all-mighty dollar and right now lots of people are fucked.
Any employer would be glad to have you working for them--Just from reading your blog for just a short time now I know you are a smart, funny articulate woman!! So yeah, dont blame yourself...and hang in there!

Well, let's look at it analytically...your resume isn't the problem, right? Have you tried applying to jobs above and below your experience level to make sure you are applying for the right jobs? Have you thought of a career change, I know some fields are alot tougher than others to get hired in right now... Getting jobs in an open posting are really tough, since most jobs are only posted because they have to be legally since they already probably posted with one internal candidate in mind. How do you dress? Have you tried interview training to see if you are throwing up some random red flag with one of your answers that you are unaware of? I hate to say it, but the job market has sucked for years now, and it may have nothing to do with you, which I know is not comforting to you since you can't fix that...

*HUG* I don't know what to say, hon!

I can tell you that on two different occasions I found out after the fact from other people in the companies that the interviewers felt that I was over-qualified - maybe that's what's happening to you?

awww, keep your chin up. It's hard for everyone who is looking and your not the only person I know of who has been looking for that long. I'm sure that when the perfect job comes along you'll land it. Best wishes

I'm so sorry, hon. *Great Big Hugs* to you. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with you at all. Like someone else has said - the economy really sucks right now and a ton of people are having a hard time finding jobs. Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way!

I totally feel for you. My husband is in the same boat, as well as my friend's hubby. They can't even get interviews. This economy totally sucks. Around here they get hundreds of applications for every job. It's definitely not you, even though it feels like it sometimes. Hope something comes along soon.

So sorry! My daughter just got a library job but she is 2 classes short of her masters degree and has been volunteering at the library that hired her since she moved to Texas in late August. I was able to start my career because my brother's GF saw potential in me and I asked a lot of questions. I really do believe networking is the way to go- tell everyone you know you are looking for employment; I mean everyone- and don't give up. Something is bound to open. Good luck and in the meantime keep losing weight. PS. Don't take the job rejection personally!

Don't give up. Times are rough, maybe you should look for jobs in unconventional places. Or just offer your services to small local companies. We had a marketer walk in off the street and hand a resume to us and we weren't even looking for one, and we hired her!

Just keep your spirits up and keep trying!

The trouble is this: they spend, what? 15-30 minutes with you? Ask you a series of questions that they asked the person before you as well as the person after you. They don't know YOU. They know a fraction of you, and that IS unfair because if they spent any time with you at all then they would know enough to hire you on the spot. I remember your post after your interview. No one can be that delusional - you said that you nailed it and I completely believe that you did. Unfortunately, someone's niece, nephew or someone who owed someone a favor probably got the job. I keep reading over and over again that gaining jobs has changed: it's ALL about networking and who you know. There is nothing wrong with you, M. You are among many (including me) that are looking for work and it's their loss. Chin up, and a big SQUEEZE for you right now.
